TLU Performance Skills | Cabo Edition
Nine micro-skills of connection.
Trial performance is what jurors actually experience. Like golf or tennis, human connection breaks down into micro-skills you can train until they become instinctive.
Eye Contact & Micro-Connecting
Build trust one juror at a time. Engage individuals within the group, creating moments where each juror feels directly seen, considered, and included.
Voice Control & Cadence
Use pacing, pausing, and tone to control the rhythm of your presentation. Slow the room down when something matters. Let key moments breathe.
Facial Expression & Congruence
Align your expressions with the substance of your message so jurors trust what they're seeing and hearing — especially in difficult human moments.
Gesticulation & Movement
Develop controlled, intentional gestures that clarify structure, emphasize contrast, and give shape to ideas that might otherwise feel abstract.
Glance Control
Direct attention with precision. Shift your gaze to signal importance or draw the jury into a moment without needing to say it out loud.
Creating Space
Assign meaning to positions in the room so jurors can track people, events, and transitions. Space becomes a visual anchor for memory.
Word Selection
Replace legal phrasing with clear, everyday words. Use "we," "us," and "our" to create shared perspective, and imagery so concepts can be felt.
Economy of Words
Say only what needs to be said. Clean, precise phrasing keeps your message sharp and keeps jurors focused on what actually matters.
Listening
Make listening visible. Show the jury you are present, absorbing, and in control — and respond with intention rather than reaction.
Fourteen years of teaching human connection.
Human Connection in Trial
At TLU Skills Training bootcamps, the focus is the science and technique of human connection within the context of a small group — namely, the jury. From 2014 to 2020, Dan led over 100 four-day programs. When the pandemic forced training to go virtual, he had a rare opportunity to observe the best trial lawyers remotely and decode the superhuman results they achieved — a reinvention that evolved into the program offered today.
Mastering the Micro-Skills
Honing human connection requires breaking each component into micro-skills: eye contact, voice control, emotional control, hand and body movement, glance control, word selection, listening, and creating space. During voir dire, opening statements, and cross-examinations, participants practice, record, and refine these skills — with six weekly Zoom meet-ups.
Real-Case Application
Every participant brings a real case they're currently working on. This hands-on approach includes preparing and delivering a recorded opening statement, analyzed on playback for a precise assessment of performance and connection skills — in a supportive environment built for improvement. Most participants classify the training as a case expense — just like they would an expert witness, a focus group, or trial graphics.
A Commitment to Transformation
Through structured feedback and practical application, the program refines the subtle yet powerful elements that make the difference in the courtroom. You'll leave with a heightened ability to engage and influence — transforming how you present your cases and connect with jurors.
A live performance lab.
You will be on your feet presenting — coached, challenged, and refined in real time. Training starts from an exemplar trucking case so patterns are clear, then moves to your own.
Opening Statement Performance
Deliver an opening from the shared case and receive direct coaching on connection, clarity, and emotional alignment. Every adjustment is immediate and actionable.
Voir Dire Practice
Voir dire is all about connection, and the first five minutes are critical. Learn how to master rapport every time, with every jury.
Expert Cross-Examination
Control witnesses through presence, pacing, and precision. Keep the jury engaged while maintaining command of the room.
Direct Examination & Witness Prep
Prepare witnesses to communicate clearly, truthfully, and with emotional impact — guiding testimony that feels natural while reinforcing the themes the jury needs to remember.
Apply It to Your Own Case
Perform your own opening, cross, voir dire, and direct while integrating the techniques you've trained — refining in real time until they feel natural, controlled, and repeatable.
"Anything that makes us more credible with jurors cannot be ignored. Gestures, eye contact, voice control, and smiling all make a difference — but you must have someone who can demonstrate these skills and coach you thru the transition to establishing real connections with jurors."
